Belboz is Taken by Surprise

Belboz had found little of interest in Astra's description of life in
Aqualaria. So he had let his mind wander, and had been considering the
possibility of intercepting Fred's squire and making sure that he and the
fresh mount that he brought never rendezvoused with Fred. He could kill
Fred's current horse too while he was at it. Not only would their being
horseless make it much more difficult for his "guests" to leave the caves,
but also he found horsemeat quite pleasant when he was in his draconic
form.
So he was taken rather by surprise when Checkers, assuming that Astra had finished for the present, asked him: "Belboz, what land do you come from originally? You must have seen some wondrous things?" The problem that he had was that dragons were solitary by their nature, so that for many years he had not had a land in the sense that Checkers meant. Instead he had spent most of his time in his lair in the Shreken, with only occasional relatively brief trips outside. As a young dragon, however, he had spent several years almost continuously in human form, so that he could learn about the nature and customs of his great enemy, Man. Books of lore could only tell you so much. Most of that time he had spent in Allaria. However that was many hundreds of years ago now, so his current knowledge was somewhat patchy. The land about which he now knew most, ironically enough, was Checkers' own, but he could hardly talk about that.
