Fred, operating on pure adrenaline, tackled the figure straight to the ground without bothering to see who...or _what_ it was, first. Or at least he _tried_ to. With a snarl, the figure threw Fred off and stood up, panting. "What the hell do you think you're doing?!"* it yelled, in some strange language. "I'm sorry?" said Fred, who had been about to charge the figure again, but stopped in confusion as a beam of moonlight came in through the storage room's low window and illuminated the intruder into Fred's hidey-hole. The person was wearing odd, loose garments of bright red, in a style Fred had never seen before. He had long, flowing white hair down past the waist, _pure_ white, like that of a very old person, not pale blonde--but the face was young, in fact, the whole bearing was like that of a teenager. The face was small-featured and the eyes were strangely..._yellow_?! (No, it can't be, it's just light hazel...) Fred told himself. It looked as if the hands that were clenched in fists in front of the young man ended in _claws_, but he couldn't quite tell from here. Last but certainly not least was the strangest feature of all--the intruder's ears were pointy ears like a cat's, not a human's, covered with white fur, and were on top of his head! "Ya done starin' yet, stranger?" said the young man angrily, standing in an aggressive pose. Obviously, he also thought that this storage room was only big enough for _one_ person to hide out in...and he was it. Fred couldn't understand the words, but he noticed that _fangs_ showed when the boy opened his mouth... "A vampire!" he gasped, making the first guess he could. Now the moment of confusion was over. Slaying bad guys, fighting evil--_this_ was what Fred had been trained to do, as a Knight of the realm. "Monster!" He leapt towards the young man, whipping out his sword. (He doesn't look very tall or heavy,) thought Fred. (I can probably take him...) "Ah, so you want a fight, then, eh?" said the young man in that same strange language, and pulled out his own sword. It at first looked like a long, thin blade of inferior construction, much beat-up and dented, with some actual notches in the blade here and there...then all of a sudden it grew much longer and wider, with a shining, slightly curved blade and a furry ruff for a hand guard! (Ye gods!) thought Fred, now a little put off. (That's what I wanted the old wizard to do to MY sword!) "A-hem", said a quiet voice. Fred started at the sound. It was in his own language, but it wasn't the strange vampire-boy speaking. The voice seemed to be coming from directly inside his head. "Before you cut this person to ribbons, you might want to know who they really are." the voice went on. "I have seen inside this boy's heart. He is not evil. He doesn't have to be your enemy." "Well, how can I know who he really is if I can't understand his language?" demanded Fred--out loud. He felt foolish the moment he realised he had actually spoken. "Nani?!" said the vampire. "Who are you talking to? If you're going to fight me, get on with it already!" "That's where I come in," the sword replied to Fred. "I AM a MAGIC sword, you know." "Come on, why are you just standing there? Hurry up and fight me!" demanded the boy...and THIS time, Fred understood him! "I can understand you!" he gasped. "Some kind of spell? Are you a houshi?" asked the boy, lowering his sword a bit, but keeping it ready to attack, just in case. "A what?" said Fred, confused. "Hello? What's going on in here? Inuyasha, I TOLD you to lie down and get some sleep! You're going to be in no condition to fight Naraku tomorrow if you don't--Oh...hello..." the new person trailed off as she saw Fred. It was a young girl, with thick black hair reaching to a few inches down her back, and a strangely-constructed outfit of green and white, including a very abbreviated skirt that ended several inches above the knee. "Er, I'm Sir Fred, a knight, and I was running away from some bandits who were chasing me, and I thought I'd just hide up here so I could get some sleep...and then I saw this guy--" with a jerk of his head, Fred indicated Inuyasha "--just as a vague shape in the darkness, so naturally, considering what kind of day I'd been having, I just assumed he was going to attack me..." "I see." said the girl, and for the first time, Fred noticed that he was hearing a faint echo behind her words when she spoke--and the echo was the _original_ language--the same strange one Inuyasha had been using. She must be from the same country, whatever it was. "Inuyasha, put away the Tetsusaiga; this guy's okay." "But Kagome..." whined the vampire-boy, pleadingly, "He jumped me for no reason! Can't I thump him just a _little_?" "No, Inuyasha." Kagome shook her head and rolled her eyes. "If this guy is a knight, maybe he can help us in our quest. Knights are usually _good_ guys, where I come from." "But--" began Inuyasha, still holding the sword. "SIT!" yelled the girl, and the vampire-boy fell _violently_ forward onto his face with a loud thump. Fred was confused, but also found himself trying hard not to laugh. "Right. Here's the deal. Inuyasha here is a half-demon, in case you were wondering..." "DEMON?!" yelled Fred. "That's even worse than a vampire! Get back, raven-haired maiden, and I shall save--" "He's a _good_ guy," Kagome cut him off. "Oh, he talks up a big story, tries to act all fierce and gruff, but inside, he's really just a cuddly little teddy bear." Inuyasha, who had by this time put his sword back in its sheath and was now sitting on his haunches in a strange manner, far more like the pose of a dog than a human, rolled his eyes and snorted sarcastically. "Feh." Kagome continued as if she hadn't been interrupted. "Inuyasha and I and our other friends were on a quest to try to get the shards of the Shikon Jewel back together. It's a very powerful magical artifact, and if it falls into the wrong hands..." Kagome trailed off, ominously. "Anyway, I had decided to go through the Bone-Eater's well to get back to my _own_ time for a quick visit--er, don't ask, long story--and Inuyasha accidentally fell in along with me, but when we came out, we found ourselves not in modern Tokyo...but _here_. In _this_ strange place." Kagome finished and looked Sir Fred in the eye. "Please, sir...where are we? And do you know how we could get back?" Fred stared at them, wondering how much of this strange tale was true, how much he could trust this girl and this...half _demon_ boy. But it was true that he hadn't had much luck on his quest until now, and could use a bit of help... ------------------ *Author's note: Of course, Inuyasha is speaking Japanese...but I wanted the _audience_ to know what he's saying, while establishing that Fred doesn't. Hence I put Inuyasha's lines in italics, to make it look a little "different". It's a clumsy method, I know, but...(shrugs) with the limited HTML tags available, it was the best I could do. Fred was raised in this realm all his life and has never heard Japanese; that's from _Earth_. This realm doesn't _have_ a Japan.
