You, in the Dragon's Lair

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 34650

You follow Fred's hiding strategy and immediately go to the most obvious place for Fred to find you: the Dragon's Lair. You figure Fred would think to look for you there first, but then again, he's probably off searching some odd sections of the caves where you've never been, so you think you're safe.

As you enter the dragon's lair, you find he is still laughing hilariously. It seems Astra has broken out into a rendition of the latest bard hit, "Dragon Killin' Blues." As you sneak up very quietly, you listen to Astra's out-of-tune contralto voice and catch a glimpse of her body flailing away with no sense of rhythm.

"Went up to the dragon
With my sword in my hand
But the big ol’ dragon saw me
He said 'Don’t you understand?
I’m the dragon.
Haven’t you heard the news?
You knights got one thing in common
You got the dragon killin’ blues.'

Just as Astra finishes the last words, you manage to chop off the dragon's head with a clean swipe of your butcher knife. Unfortunately, the dragon is rather Hydra-like, and immediately grows two heads out of its neck.

One of the heads is now following your every movement, and spewing fire at occasional intervals. Luckily, you are rather agile, and the dragon hasn't hit you yet. The other head is still laughing uncontrollably and watching Astra dance to a completely different rhythm as she starts singing (if you can call it that) the next verse.

"'You must stab him in the heart,'
Said the wise man to me.
'If you want to kill the dragon,
That's where your thrust should be.'
Here's the dragon.
Now I can't afford to lose.
I got one shot at the dragon,
I got the dragon killin' blues."

As your ears finally manage to tune out that horrible singing, you realize that the fire-spewing head is very dizzy from following you as you ran circles around the dragon. Now all you have to do is take that wise man's advice and thrust your Butcher Knife of Dragon Vanquishing into his heart. You lean back to plunge the knife into what you think is the heart area...

  1. and you score a direct hit!
  2. but Fred comes in, yells, "Found you! You're it!" and runs off, distracting you long enough for the plunge to hit somewhere else.
  3. and as the knife connects with the dragon's soft underbelly, Fred comes in and thinks it would be a good idea to become a backup singer for Astra.
