It was a night of bright moonlight, light enough for them to see a dark
line of
land on the horizon, perhaps ten miles away, and hopefully not just
another island like the one they were on.
They were frustrated though, for there was a strong wind in their faces.
If they
could build a raft, with or without a sail, the wind would prevent their
making
any progress towards the land. Walking round the island not only showed
them that its
perimeter was only two miles or so, but also that on the downwind side
there was
no land to be seen.
They built themselves a shelter from the wreckage of the ship, hoping that in the morning the wind would have dropped or its direction would have changed.
