Evidently Velus was starting to feel better, for he suddenly reached out
and goosed Astra.
"Eep!" she squeaked. She swung round with such force that a ripping sound indicated that she had done further damage to her clothing, and glared at Velus. "I've told you before, you can look but you can't touch! Do that again, and you'll be geography." "Don't you mean history?" Fred asked, sufficiently interested to have stopped crying. "No. What I was indicating to Velus is that bits of him would be spread over a very large area." "Ah, I see. Well, why don't you do that anyway? We probably still need another sacrifice." "Hey!" Velus objected. But to his surprise, Astra took his part. "No," she said. "Did you see how he managed to paddle the raft for fifty yards across the grassy plain, to where we were standing by this stream? Anyone who can do something as remarkable as that must surely have been blessed by the gods, and they might take it amiss if we were to sacrifice him." "So were you only bluffing when you threatened to dismember me if I touched you again?" Velus asked.
