With Fred again as the one measuring distance, and Astra again observing, and Velus again trying to keep pace, the trio continued northeast along the spit. This part of the spit was low and sandy, with fields of sea oats and strands of palm trees appearing from time to time. But there was little else of note that morning. Finally, after a break for lunch, they continued. In the middle of the afternoon, the shoreline curved sharply toward the west. The north wall of the lagoon loomed, and it was impossible to see over it. If they were human it might be explored from where it rose from the spit, but Astra was not sure that they would have been able to get far even then. In their mer-folk form, exploration was impossible. However, she did notice two little patches of land about 100 strokes from the centre of the north wall, and one hundred strokes apart from each other. These seemed obvious targets to explore. From the first, a wisp of white gas arose. Whether it was steam, or something else, she could not tell. This patch appeared to be quite barren and of a rusty-coloured rock. The second patch contained a number of large trees that did not appear to be of a type known to Fred or Astra.
