Fred and Vela felt their way through darkness, until after about fifty
metres another grating let through a little light from above. They
listened carefully, but could hear nothing.
Gambling that the chamber above was unoccupied, Vela climbed on Fred's shoulders so that she could push open the grating. Then she climbed through and managed to help Fred climb up. Fortunately the room was unoccupied. They took stock. In the chaos in the stables, they had only managed to bring one saddlebag with them. Going back to the stables wasn't an option. The noise that the horses had made would have been sure to bring guards onto the scene. The saddlebag which they had was the one that contained:
