Left destitute in a strange land, Lord Fred had lost neither his sense of humour nor his poise. Musing on the turn of fortune's fickle wheel, and certain that this wheel would turn in his favour if he had patience, he bargained with the owner of the Red Lion, a local pub and hostel. In exchange for board, supper, and two bits a week, Fred would empty chamberpots in the morning, and serve drinks in the afternoon and evening. (Two bits was worth one quarter of a pecca, the standard silver coin of the area.) Lord Fred had done his job well, without any unusual events, for two weeks. One night, a hermit enters the bar.
