Spike, lost and disoriented after a vicious magical attack by Ethan Rayne,
accepts Josh's offer of hospitallity in the Staircase Room. Maybe they'd
have some smokes. Spike had to have something...he hadn't been able to
visit the butcher in days and even if he wanted to, which he didn't, he
couldn't harm humans because of the mechanical doohickey in his brain.
fact, Spike, with his ancient vampire life, had managed to hear legends of
the Staircase Room and was curious to know if they were true.
In 1938, he had been in a large library, eating lost patrons, when he had
found several yellowed papers in a display case detailing 'The Tower Of
Stairs, a Treatise of Fiction in 15th Century France'.
In 1954, he had been subdued by a Watcher Council operative, who had
severely beaten him with a book called 'Towers To Other Dimensions: One
Room and Burbankism'. Spike had barely escaped this incident by stealing a
delivery truck.
They make it back to the Staircase Room, coincidentally at the very end of
the second story. Josh follows Spike as he roams the main area, confirming
many details he had read through the glass of the display case. The author
even had described the TV though of course had no idea what it was about.
Annotations, seperate from the manuscrip, had assumed it was a place where
puppet shows was put on from below.
