Jerry still couldn't comprehend what the hell was going on. The South Platte River had apparently far more water at its source than anyone had imagined, for there was now a gigantic sea just a few miles south at the Colorado/Nebraska state line. What's more, the edge of the land before the water was perfectly straight, almost as if someone had carefully cut it with a razor, as Skip had put it earlier. While Bert and Skip continued their conversation, peppered with religious sentiments and speculations about their friends and families who live out of state, Linda still fiddled with the radio. She still couldn't pull a signal out of Denver or even eastern Wyoming. In between the local podunk signals with the sounds of classic country music, she starts tuning in strange new sounds. Are these new radio stations? New to their ears, yes. Everyone goes quiet as Linda turns up the volume on the first clear signal she can tune in. Why is the guy with the funky accent talking about Nebraska anyway? And why is he saying the state has somehow "disappeared"? While all this is going on, everyone inside is oblivious to the sight outside in the parking lot, as more and more semi trucks start pulling in, having been turned away from the highway that was a straight shot to Denver from here, Interstate 76. Most truckers stay inside their cabs and get on their CB radios. Two or three of the drivers make a beeline for the store...
