"Horace is here, then?" Fred asked.
"Perhaps. If you will first answer my question, then maybe I will give a fuller answer to yours. "I have reason to believe that Horace is being held by these men against his will," Fred said, not wishing to reveal the unusual circumstances. "As a centaur yourself, you can surely not condone that?" Hartley looked uncomfortable. "Like I said, I run the barn for these men. The job provides me with food and shelter and a modest wage. If they choose to bring a horse or a centaur here, I am not going to ask questions about how they came by it. It's not uncommon here for centaurs to have owners rather than being free. I might not like it, but knowing that I can't change it I am prepared to live with it." "I suppose that I can understand that. But suppose that they brought a woman with them to see Horace, and that when they left the woman was not with them? Suppose that they had harmed her or perhaps locked her up in one of the stalls? Wouldn't that make you start asking questions?"
