"All right," the leader of the spectres said. "We will make a deal with
you to get the lava man in our stew pot." The third one slapped his forehead with his hand. "D'oh!" he exclaimed. "Enough!' the leader exclaimed. He urned to Fred. "But understand, whatever this earth or dirt of yours is---we rule the underworld, for we are lords of death and that which consumes human flesh and human life." He stepped up to Fred and placed both cold hands on Fred's shoulders, squeezing them. "Therefore, when 48 hours have passed, if you have not brought us the lava man, ready for our stewpot, we will befuddle your feet and bring you back here. And then there will be no deals, no bargains, no games. We will roast you and eat you. Now go!" Fred took up two baskets to gather up earth and immediately set off to seek the lava man.
