With so little time, Fred hurried up to the overworld to gather up plenty
of dirt. Wen he'd filled his baskets, he hung them over his shoulders
and returned to the lava pools. Then he saw the lava man. "Hey you! What gives with leading me down to the frozen chosen?" Fred exclaimed. "I thought you'd be barbecue by now!" the lava man exclaimed. Unsuspecting, he walked right up to Fred. "I guess now that pretending to be crazy hasn't worked, I'll have to carry you down there myself." He opened his arkms as he came up to Fred. "Brace yourself, because this is really going to hurt!" Fred felt the incredible heat from the lava man, but just as the lava man got into range, Fred swung the left hand basket at him, showering the dirt over him. Startled, the lava man twinkled as the dirt banked some of his fire. Fred grit his teeth and tackled him, then poured the second basket of dirt over him. The dirt quickly caked over the searing hot surface of the lava man's head and chest, immobilizing him. Fred rapidly scooped up the fallen clumps of dirt until the chest of the lava man was coated with earth. It pinned the lava man and sapped his strength. Fred hurried up to the overworld again with the baskets and retrieved more dirt. At last, after several trips, Fred saw that his time was running out, but the lava man, now covered with a hardened shell of baked dirt, was at last cool enough enough and solid enough to lift over Fred's shoulder like a stiff log. Fred hoisted him up and carried him down into the tunnels. As the minutes ticked away, he thought he would never find the kitchen, but just as the spectres had predicted, his feet followed the right course, and he found himself in the great, machinery-filled room. The spectres had a long roasting pan laid out on the slab, and the fire in the oven was roaring. Across the room, a table had been set with a long, empty platter and three plates, as well as bottles of wine and a tossed salad. "Well Fred," the leader of the spectres said. "Here you find yourself. You must stay for supper. We have a brand new recipe to try out on you." "And I've kept my bargain," Fred said. He set the rigid form of the lava man right into the roasting pan. "And you can have him!" The spectres were amazed! But when one of them poked the two-timed fork into the baked-dirt encasement of the lava man, he made a discovery. Having been extinguished so thoroughly by the dirt, there was nothing inside the coating of baked earth. There was nothing left of the lava man! His flames, once extinguished, left nothing behind. Cheated of their meal, the three spectres whirled on Fred.
