The Wind didn't touch Fred, but suddenly the cave around him whisked
away. He felt as though he were standing still, and the rest of the
world whisked by. But when he looked down, he saw that his shredded
garments were being ripped apart even further by the fierce rush of air.
At last, he found himself in a brilliantly sunlit eyrie, all open on the sides, with a stone roof, sloped to shed rain. He was so high above the ground that below this odd house were clouds. The Wind left him, but Fred saw new, silvery clothes nearby and quickly put them on. They made him look quite handsome. When the Wind returned, she had a silvery man with her whose eyes flashed. This is Storm," she said. "He is my ally. We bring life and renewal to the earth. The Frozen Chosen will soon devour all who come into the caves. They are turning the earthinto a grave and a house of bones. My task is for you to go back and destroy them." "Well, you see," Fred said. "I'm grateful to you, but as you're so powerful, wouldn't victory be more certain if you destroyed them?" "Is he really that slow witted?" Storm asked. She raised her hand. "Fred, the spectres flee before me. I cannot corner them down in those caves. But you can---" "Oh, you mean go back and have dinner with them?" Fred asked. "With me as the main course?" "Yes!" Storm exclaimed. "Go into their kitchen, and when they are unsuspecting, you can destroy them. We will give you powers to subdue them." "Fred, we will give you limited weapons of wind and lightning to destroy these agents of death that devour the living," the Wind told him. "You faced them once. Face them again with the gifts we will provide you." As Fred hesitated, Storm frowned and said, "Speak! What is your decision?"
