Quarrels in the Street

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 32866

Fred couldn’t deny he loved the city of Palaris. The city was always bustling with interesting-sometimes insane-crowds. Around every corner was a different store, bar, or inn of some sort. Favored by common-folks, churches, businessmen, gypsies, and thieves, Palaris was indeed a wonderful city.

At the time Fred exited the church, the sky was filled with sad, gray clouds, stretching for miles along the sky. Although the city was still dry of rain, it would not remain this way for long if the kids who swore they had heard thunder in the distance were telling the truth. Many went about there business as usual, but a few finished their errands early and kept their children indoors.

Fred jumped down the stairs leading up to the Church and pushed himself through the waves of people strolling along the sidewalk. Fred had always thought that the sidewalks were too small for a city this size, and he was probably right. With them being only about a house door’s length wide, many citizens were forced to walk on the grass or the edge of the road.

Without looking both ways, Fred dashed across the dusty road, forcing a moving carriage to come to a sudden stop.

Fred didn’t think twice about what he just done. He’d been crossing the streets blindly every since their governor had passed the Citizen Right of Way Law. With it, all traffic in the streets was forced to wait for those crossing the streets. If it came to the event that a driver did crash into somebody, they would pay so dearly for the person he or she hit that they would probably go poor. At one point, Fred had considered letting the driver hit him on purpose to earn a wage, but he decided against it in the end.

Fred wasn’t the only one who abused this law. Many lazy and ignorant folks had taken a habit in crossing the streets freely. The only difference between Fred and them were the different people they had forced to stop, and the different feuds that they had caused.

“What the hell is your problem?!” bellowed a voice behind Fred.

Fred turned around to see a tall, muscular boy on brink of manhood stepping out of the carriage he had halted. The first thing he noticed about this boy was his fine, green and white clothing, obviously made by the finest clothes makers in the city. Fred then saw that this person’s clothes were soaked in a dark liquid, probably tea. The next thing that caught his eye was his hay blonde hair tied into a pony tail, reaching down to the bottom thing that.

The boy walked towards Fred and as their eyes met, he glared. A crash of thunder suddenly filled the air as they stood.

“What the hell is going through your head you idiotic bastard?” said the boy, barely below a yell. “I jumped right in front of us.”

Fred smiled. In the past, he’d had feuds with people like this. They were rich snobs who thought that they owned the city, who thought that we should pamper the streets for them as they move. He knew how to handle people like this.

“My young friend” Fred said smoothly. “You don’t seem to know how the laws of this city. You see, citizens have the right of way over the traffic here, so anything bad that happened to you was your own fault, or perhaps your drivers, if you want to blame him.

“TO DEVIL WITH THE DAMN LAWS!” bellowed the boy. Crowds had now begun form around them. However, neither of the two took notice of this. “You endangered your life! You endangered our lives! Use your common sense you deranged moron!”

Fred was no longer smiling after this. “I suggest you show a bit more respect towards your elders, boy. It would do you good.” The two just glared. Eventually, Fred turned to leave and the boy did the same. Slowly, the crowds began to vanish.

  1. Fred pushed the quarrel out of his mind and continued towards the weapon shop.
  2. "By the way, there's something on your shirt" added Fred.
