Fixing a hole

Six hours later the young man shook his head and sighed, clearly unimpressed with Fred's effort. It was after all the middle of a street that had been trampled by feet and hooves for centuries, and Fred had not taken the time to find a suitable digging tool, so he had been scraping away with his fingernails and made an unimpressive impression about half an inch deep.

Deciding to speed things up a bit, the young man pointed his left pinky at the ground under Fred, rolled his eyes and enunciated: "EXCAVATUS!"

In a bright flash, the ground under Fred dissolved, and he fell...
