Well, after a week, Fred has collected exactly nine dollars and eighty- seven cents, a few wadded-up receipts, and a gazillion and one dirty or annoyed looks from New Yorkers. He also has been told to "move on" by at least sixteen police officers.

1. Fred assumes that he has gotten enough money, and marches down to the World Trade Center to negotiate its purchase.
2. Fred is mugged. They ignore the cash and take his sign instead.
3. Fred stumbles upon a goldmine when he starts selling pencils and string.
