"Wouldn't it be better for me to accompany you openly?" Fred suggested. "I
could pretend to be the Baroness's centaur trainer. If there were two of
us, then it might make them think twice before doing anything rash."
"These men are hardly master criminals, but they aren't idiots, Fred. They would be bound to be suspicious if a man that I hadn't mentioned before was to accompany me. They might decide not to take me to Horace after all." "I suppose that you're right," Fred conceded reluctantly. He had a bad feeling about all this. When Astra returned to the men's table, the candle on it had burnt down almost to its base. The only other obvious change was that the men were all a little drunker. "Hello, darlin'," Fat Jack greeted her. "Are you ready to come with us to see the centaur?" "I am," Astra said. The men staggered to their feet, and Astra accompanied them out of the inn, along the main road for a short distance, and then off into a side alley. She avoided looking over her shoulder to check if Fred was following them. She was confident that he would be, and she did not want to risk tipping off the men. Not that, in their inebriated condition, they would be very likely to notice if she looked back.
