Astra looked at Turik suspiciously. Was he telling the truth, or had he
somehow divined her true identity? "So how did you know what this princess
looks like?" she asked, trying to sound as off-hand as she could.
"In my line of work, one travels widely. I made a trip to Aqualaria a couple of years ago. I was in the crowd lining the route of a big state procession, and saw Princess Astra briefly at twenty yards as she rode by. A fine figure of a woman - very nearly as fine as yourself, in fact." Astra ignored his attempt at flattery. She decided that there was no way of telling whether he suspected that she really was Princess Astra. He was too experienced and shrewd an operator to let anything slip. She looked at the green card bearing the border post's stamp that the guard had given her, its colour presumably denoting her status as a noblewoman. Then she slipped it into the pocket of her leotard, where it joined the four gold pieces. That card complicated matters. She needed to get herself a temporary job to earn some money, but any prospective employer would presumably want to see her card before taking her on. Once he saw that it was a green one, he would naturally be curious about why a noblewoman should need to get a job.
