What Rift had whispered to Astra was: "What would your parents say,
Princess, if they
found out that you had conceived out of wedlock?" So not only had he been
more observant
of her condition than the bandits had been, Astra
realised unhappily, but he had somehow worked out who she was. It had
perhaps been a
mistake for her to mention her Aquilarian heritage during the lawyer's
first
interrogation (#1699).
Once she had regained her own form, her
red hair had probably given her away, for red hair was rare in Aquilaria
and Astra's
was famous. She thought she could predict
what her parents would do if they were to learn of her pregnancy: disown
and disinherit her.
"If you don't want them to find out," Rift had continued, "then you and Fred will do as I say. Should anything happen to me, then Tarin has instructions to ensure that a certain sealed envelope is sent to Aquilaria."
