Fred and Astra might not have been familiar with the computer science
concept of a "binary search", but they felt that going to the mid-point of
the two week period would be a reasonable way to start. If the Snark
required Horace for a dinner with the king of the centaurs in four days
time, then surely his kidnappers would have taken him at least five days
into the future to make sure that they prevented this. Thus going ahead
only one day seemed unlikely to achieve anything.
"So here we are, I suppose," Fred said doubtfully. Except that the Snark and his guards had disappeared, their surroundings seemed unchanged. "Assuming that we are going to try to carry out this mission, how are we going to find out who is holding this Horace, and - more importantly - where?" "By bribing or intimidating some of the local low-life, I suppose," Astra replied. (The Snark had given them enough money to cover reasonable expenses.) "I wonder where the nearest inn is? That would probably be the best place to find some of them." It did not take them too long to find out from a passer-by where the local inn was. Soon they they were entering its main public bar.
