Andrea came back to her senses quite suddenly, with only fragmentary,
nightmarish memories of the last two years. She pushed a lock of hair out
of her face, and looked down at herself. She gasped at what she saw. She
was filthy and was dressed in rags. Her hair had grown down to her waist,
and was matted and unkempt.
She was sitting beside a dirt road in an unfamiliar town, with a tin mug in front of her. It seemed that she had been living as a beggar and, judging by the paucity of coins in the mug, had not been doing very well. Seeing a man approaching, she called out: "Is there anywhere around here where I could get a bath?"
