Fred and Astra had discovered over the last year that there was a whole
underground world within the Southern Caves. There were towns and
barracks, and market-places for trading food and goods that were brought
in from outside.
In the first couple of days, Astra had acquired an outfit of trousers, jerkin and boots, all made of supple black leather, together with a broadsword, scabbard and belt. (Astra reckoned that conventional armour was too heavy and also impeded agility.) In striking contrast to her black attire and long red hair (there had been no opportunity for a proper haircut and she had refused Fred's offer to hack her hair off with his dagger), her face and bare arms looked very pale. She and Fred had not seen the sun for a year, and their tans had faded away long ago. There was no day and night underground, and they could not tell how long they had been in the caves. Astra's guess was eight months, Fred's was ten months. They were beginning to wonder whether they would ever find the dragon. How could it be so elusive? Was it hiding from them using magic? Could it conceivably have left the Southern Caves and moved elsewhere? The growing frustration that they were feeling was starting to show itself in frequent arguments about trivial things. Currently they were bickering about whose turn it was to polish their swords.
