"It must be possessed," Astra said, puffing a little from trying to run up the stairs fast enough to keep ahead of the desk.

"Or it's an illusion and not really a desk," Fred replied.

They reached the higher bridge which they had so recently left.

1. They crossed it and came to the column at the far end, where they found another staircase.
2. Deciding that fleeing from the desk was undignified, and probably ultimately futile, they turned to face it.
