Maculay heard the commotion and ventured out to see the fight. He had on
his nightcap and nightgown and looked very grandfatherly. When he emerged
from his cabin, he saw a very large man threatening the great
granddaughter of Alfred with a very long stick, and he was not going to
allow that. He made and incantation and cast a spell of shrinking against
the man. As soon as he cast it, the man stopped in his tracks. He
dropped the stick. Andrea leaped to her feet and ran back to her cottage to grab the shoes. Jim deftly pulled the stick out of Torrance's reach. Then Torrance shuddered. He appeared to grow right before their eyes. Eight feet. Nine feet. Ten feet. "Now you've done it," said the tree spitefully, "You know that branch is going to take years to grow back!" But Torrance didn't stop growing. Eleven feet. Twelve feet. Thirteen feet. He was now twice his size. Having hastily grabbed her boots, Andrea scrambled outside and toward the woods. Jim followed. The giant took a step forward, but seemed uneasy in his new size. He was now three times his original height, and many times his weight, a mammoth the size of a castle rampart. But he spied the girl in front of him. "Traitor," he murmurred, and plunged forward through the woods after her.
