After a much longer hike than expected, Andrea came upon a clearing with a
small but well kept cabin in the middle. She sighed in relief, and hoped
that the occupants would be friendly. Her trip had left her mentally and
physically fatigued. Her clothes, though still fine, were worn from the
journey. Andrea pushed open the door into the cabin. She could see a fire burning in a fire pit at one end. Over the fire hung an iron caldron with savory food of some sort. The rest of the cabin was lightly decorated with a bed of straw, a table and two rustic chairs. On the table was a lamp giving limited light to the room. Andrea gladly pulled a chair up to the fire took the load off her weary feet. She was still a little frightened in the unknown, but the fire gave her courage that the occupant of the cabin would be friendly. It did not take long for her to meet the occupant. After a few minutes with the fire the door opened. In strode a tall, thin man, dressed all in black, with a black cavalier's hat, long black wispy mustace and goatee, and a menacing sabre at his belt. Andrea knew at once that it was Albert de' Lyon, the Lion of the Woods. He was a vigilante of sorts, a masterful swordsman who enforced his own justice in the woods. Peasants admired him, but her father hated him. The kingdom had a death warrant on his head of 50 gold for killing local sheriffs who did not abide with his brand of justice. This time, though, the Lion was carrying a gourd and some leeks for his dinner. When he saw the girl he immediately dropped them and drew his long sabre. Andrea tried to hide her fear. She stood. "Good sire," she said, "I apologize for intruding on your dwelling." The man in black took no notice but stepped forward and grabbed the lantern from the table. "Sire, I shall pay you for whatever inconvenience I have caused," said Andrea, backing against the far wall. Again, he stepped forward with both sword and lantern in hand. Andrea could see the glint of the sharpened steel in the shadows. "Please," she begged, "let me but be with my life." "Andrea?" said the man, examining her closely. "Is that you? 'Tis I, your half brother, Albert."
