Characteristically, Astra took the lead. "Well, the toucan came back," she
said, "so it's probably safe. And almost anywhere would be preferable to
being marooned on this island. I've been so bored for the last year. I'll
go through and have a look round, and then come back and let you know what
it's like."
Astra stepped through the portal. The first thing that she noticed was how cold and clammy the fog was. The contrast to the tropical heat that she had left behind came as a bit of shock until she became accustomed to it. The fog was so thick that she could only see about twenty yards. All she could tell was that the ground was very rocky, with only a few scattered patches of dirt where a little grass struggled to grow. The surface sloped gently downwards in the direction that she was facing. Hoping that the fog might thin as she descended, she went down the slope a little way, but if anything the visibility got even worse. She reluctantly decided that she had better not go any further; after all, she wouldn't want to lose the portal. She turned round and made her way back in its direction.
