"Fred, I can't expect you to help me with this," Astra said. "You'd be risking far too much. I'm not sure that I could stay chaste for nine days, never mind ninety. I just don't seem able to help myself, though I bitterly regret the distress that I sometimes cause others. Saint Peter, I am willing to attempt this, but I should do it on my own. It is not right that another's future should be put at risk."

Saint Peter shook his head. "I am afraid that the terms are not negotiable. The redemptive power of Fred's faith in you will be an important element in this. What he is risking will give you a strong incentive to succeed, if you are truly good at heart."

"I'll be your chaperon," Fred told her. "I won't let you out of my sight. You won't have any opportunity for backsliding."

  1. "Very well, then," Astra said. "Just so long as you know the risk that you are taking. I'm touched by your faith in me, and I'll try to justify it."
  2. "No, I can't let you risk it," Astra insisted. "The second circle won't be so bad, honestly."
  3. "Except with you," Astra pointed out. "You are a very handsome man, Lord Fred. You'll need to be constantly on your guard."
