Jarlath thought that this was likely to be one of the more predictable of the bouts. His wife was a skilled swordswoman, but unarmed combat was not her forte and she rarely practised it. Though fit, she was not very muscular and was slightly built, apart from her uncommonly large bust (the legacy of another wizard with not dissimilar tastes to Belboz's). Dark elves, on the other hand, were reknowned for their skill at all forms of combat and, though most of them were not full mages, they nevertheless had some magic tricks at their disposal. They were also very fast and agile. Additionally, no doubt Artizza would not have forgotten the fighting skills that she would surely have learned as an Astra. The only advantages that Annafrid had were a longer reach and a slight edge in weight.

Astra Transtryrgia dropped the length of rope in the centre of the circle that had been marked out on the floor of the cavern, and swiftly withdrew from the circle. As referee for this contest she would keep a close eye on it to ensure that neither combatant broke the rules. Though unable to speak, she had demonstrated that she was capable of a piercing whistle, which she would use to bring matters to a halt should that prove necessary.

Annafrid and Artizza began by warily circling each other, keeping their distance from each other and the rope.. Unsure of the other's capabilities, neither wanted to risk making the first move.
