Dreaming, part II

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 29393

Fred awoke. The sun had risen, and he was lying in a thickly wooded forest. He gasped, the wood was not that of his strange dream, it was the wood of Sir Tryp, he knew this for he recognized the carving tree which was to his left. Upon turning toward that tree, one which youths and children enjoyed to message with a sharp blade, he felt a weight upon his chest. Looking down he noticed an iron medallion hanging from a chain about his neck. He did not know from where this amulet had come, but he did notice that the design in the center of the medallion was similar to that of the armor in his dream.

The dream.

The nightmare.

The women in the robes, the bloodied cook, his brother and his father! What had happened? How did he get to this wood which lay a league from his home?!? Even as these thoughts pierced his mind, a lethargy enveloped him and he fell.

Fred opened his eyes. He stood on a high hill amongst a series of hills, and on these hills was a city being built. Fred saw a man whose appearance was that of bronze; he was standing in the gate of the city, he was holding a linen cord and measuring rod. The bronze man did not speak, but beckoned to young Fred, and Fred went to him. The bronze man took Fred by the hand to a temple within the city, it was dedicated to Aryel, Unal, and Ruvol (the gods of the heavens, the storms, and the mists) - three of the pantheon most worshipped by the nativeborn of Suffex.

Fred was taken to the north gate, the way of the dead. There was an outer court with three cells on each side, its pilasters and vestibule decorated with the fruit of the gods. There was a chamber opening off the vestibule for the rinsing of holocausts and in the vestibule were two tables upon which were slaughtered the offerings. On the tables Fred saw fresh holocausts - doves and various flying creatures, squirrels and various furry creatures, trout and various scaley creatures. Then he noticed a third table. He was sure it had not been there a moment before. The bronze man pointed towards it and Fred neared. He sensed this to be the table of the Kolobites (though he knew not what such a strange name could mean). What took his breath away, however, was the offering slaughtered thereon - it was the flesh of a man! The bronze man now pushed Fred closer, shoved him against the table's ledge - a saw cut into Fred's fingers and his blood spurted onto the flesh of the human holocaust. And then the mouth of the slaughtered man moved, and it spoke, and the bronze man laughed most wickedly...

...and Fred awoke screaming.

He found himself in the arms of his mother. There were tears in her eyes. Fred was confused, bewildered. What did this awful dream portend? Another hand rubbed his shoulders, looking round he saw it belonged to his father, and there was blood on his father's face! Fred tried to put the pieces together, but his confusion trumped any understanding. A baby cried and Fred saw the nursemaid lift Jarlath to her breast. Something was not right. Was he in his parent's room? Why? He concentrated and images of red-eyed women and that somber man of bronze dissipated into the recesses of his mind. He had run to his parents... ran to them... ran. Jon was not in the room. Duke Dred had bloody scrapes on his face. The Lady D'Honaire was full of tears. Puzzle pieces were locking into place.

"Where's Jon?" asked Fred.

The Lady burst into sobs. Duke Dred held Fred gently. "Son," he said. "Tell me what you saw in that kitchen. Tell me everything leaving out not one single detail."

  1. Fred tries to recall what had occurred, tries to untwine reality from dream; had there been robed women or just a naked beauty? Did he see ornate spears or prickly tree limbs? Was it the cook on the table or a human sacrifice?
