Fred hung there against the wet wall. The mannacles were too tight, too
strong for him to escape. He was resigned to again face his captors and
to discover his final fate. The thought of the mage and the she-troll
made him angry indeed. He would not die in some dank sewer, he would not
die alone. The gods willing, he would find some way of bringing his
enemies with him to the underworld.
He leaned against the muddy wall and was able to slurp some of the dripping water. A bit of mud entered his mouth as well, yet that was neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things. Fred began to examine his life, to examine his conscience. Had he been all he could be? Was he a good son, a strong brother? Had he served his King rightly and did he pay his god the reverence due? Did he act as a gallant soldier and gentleman? What would the world think of him after his death? What would the gods think of him in the afterdeath? Many thoughts flooded the knight's mind and with them a serenity as well. He might die this very day, but he knew that he would leave behind an honorable legacy.
