Unfortunately for Josh, the recollections of Fogeno had become exaggerated with age. Fogeno and his men had been out at sea for months, and even the fat and slow animal known as the manitee appeared to take the form of a mermaid. Siloon was a backwater. The entertainment in Siloon consisted of betting on the deerfly races, seeing who could spit whiffleberry seeds the farthest, and drinking oneself into forgetfulness. Siloon produced many mariners, as going to sea was the surest way to getting out of an extremely dull place. The main industries in Siloon were fishing, worm farming, and shipbuilding. The women in Siloon were much like women elsewhere, except they tended to age more quickly than their counterparts inland due to the 330 days of sun per year that Siloon received. While there were women walking the market, most of what they had to sell was quite legal and not particularly exciting.
