Fred grabbed the heavy gold chain around Jessica's neck and pulled her in
front of him as a shield. "Not today, Malthor!" yelled Fred. Jessica
squirmed, but Fred's grip held tight. The dragon laughed deeply, "Ah, two
for the price of one!" "WAIT," shrieked Jessica, "our deal, you said!" "You think I would let you rule? Never." replied Malthor. He took a deep breath. Instictively, Fred moved aside, pulling the confused Jessica with him. Fire rushed in the spot where they stood. Fred pulled Jessica behind the pillar. She beat out the little fires on her clothing with her hands. Malthor, meanwhile, took no chances. He beat his mighty wings and flew over the pillar in order to have the perfect angle to destroy both of them. In the spacious field there was no place for them to hide. The anger burned inside of him like a massive fire. Finally, he would have his revenge. When he spied the other side of the pillar, however, Fred was nowhere to be found. Fred had discovered a grate laying in the ground next to the pillar, and pulled Jessica through it with him. They found themselves in a dark cavern with water flowing beneath their feet. "Come!" said Fred, dragging Jessica with him. They ran down the dark passage together, nearly slipping on the wet stones beneath them. Malthor spied the grate and breathed heavy fire through the aperture. By that time both Fred and Jessica were far enough down the passage that they were not burned. Fred's heart beat quickly. This was a much nastier dragon than the one he encountered in the Southern Caves. He and Jessica came to a fork in the passage. "Not to wise to trust a dragon!" said Fred writhely.
