Now quite alone, Fred looked down at the map, and tried to make sense of
the strange topographical system, with which he was quite unfamiliar. He
had been doing this for no more than a few seconds however when there was
a strange "B'DOOOIINGGG!" sound and the map began to extend in front of
him. The top end of it grew gradually longer, first drooping down onto
the ground
and then starting to dart across the sand, the bottom end all the while
remaining in Fred's fingers. Fred was taken aback by this unexpected development, so it was not for a number of seconds that he noticed that the markings on the map now consisted entirely of thick black arrow signs, pointing forward. For the first time Fred now noticed an old building in the distance, made of grey stone, on which were draped two large signs; this appeared to be the destination indicated by the map, for by now the far end of it had reached the front door and started snaking in through the gap at the bottom. Peering intently at the signs, Fred eventually discerned that this building was an inn, called "The Admiral Wobneb". The skull and crossbones adorning the outer walls gave ample notice that the place was likely to be a haunt of pirates, buccaneers and assorted cutthroats. What was of more immediate interest however was that the second sign bore the legend: "HERE BE DRAGONS!"
