At the Curio Shop

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 27130

Fred and Bert agreed that the most sensible thing to do was to get the map appraised at the curio shop on Barnham Street. If they could get a hundred bezants out of it, then they could live comfortably for a couple of years without any need to go on any hazardous sea voyages.

The shop smelled somewhat musty, and the light was dim. Karsten the clerk was on duty. "G'dafternoon, Bert. I didn' think that you were goin' out on any of your 'salvage missions' for another month yet. Are you comin' 'ere to buy?"

Bert smiled and winked, knowing that between them 'salvage missions' was code for 'plunder.' "No, sir, no big salvage missions lately. I had a little piece of work that I ran across between the big jobs, and was wondering if you could look at it, and give me a reckoning as to its value." Bert handed Karsten the map.

After assessing the map, Karsten declared

  1. "By jingo, this map is worth a thousand bezants at least. Classic work of art - these are in big demand for the great 'alls of the nobles 'ereabouts. Do you want me to fence, er, broker it for some willing buyer?"
  2. "It looks like it has about one and an 'alf mites of gold leaf. Not much value beyond that." A mite was a small copper coin that was not worth much.
  3. "Oh, a Map of Karnstagg. Would you like a Sword of Karnstagg to go with it?"
