A Fate Unknown

Your heart fills with fear as you realize that the Gorbal has seen you. You try to run away with all your might, but you can see the shadow of the Gorbal's hand of un-being, lashing out at you with unthinkable speed…

You awake to the cries of gryphons. You get up, but do not shave or bathe, you have not for a very long time and have sworn not to until you have finished your training.

You walk out of your small bedroom into the main room of the temple. Even through the thick doors of gold-plated iron, you can feel the cold mountain wind. Your teacher sits at the altar, meditating.

The old man turns his eyes, which should be blind but could see more than those of many, toward his student. "You seem troubled," he says matter-of-factly.

You sigh sadly. "I had a dream about Velus and Astra, you tell him. "They were being buried alive in an underground city full of living shadows."

"You must put them out of your mind. I see that you care for them greatly, but you have left that life behind. They must find their own destiny now."

You scowl with anger and stamp your foot, the sound ringing through the empty temple. "By Qurom, I’m tired of this! How long do I have to wait here doing nothing while the world is being destroyed around me? While my friends are dying? They think I’m dead, damn it! Why did we have to go through with that whole ridiculous ruse? And what about the Dragon?"

"It was not a ruse. Lord Frederigo D'Honaire truly is dead. You are something quite different now. You know that it is another's destiny to kill the dragon, not yours. And you know as well as I do that neither your traveling companion nor the woman you believe yourself to love could follow the path you have taken."

You know the rightness of the old man's words, but you don't want to believe him. You decide to return to your room to still the anger in your heart. But you know that however much you may want to, you will never forget Astra.
