The Abandoned Inn

"Once the dragon took up residence in the Southern Caves, few travellers would have come this way," Fred said. "Being this close to the dragon's domain would be too dangerous for them. And few travellers meant little income for the inn. The owners must have given up the struggle to keep it going."

"But somebody has been here recently," Velus said, wrinkling his nose. "The smell of pee shows that."

"Probably vagrants, who just spent a night here and then moved on," Fred said. "But I suppose we'd better investigate."

"If vagrants got in, then we should be able to get in the same way they did," Nixy pointed out. "There's probably an open door or window somewhere round the back."

Sure enough, they found that the back door stood open, the lock having been forced. They went in. It was very gloomy inside with all the windows boarded up, and so Fred lit his torch.
