Adren

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 26161

As it turned out, this exit led right into the hidden city of Kamiro, in the forest of Adren in the south of Allaria. Adren was said to be a place of great and powerful magic*, where most humans dared not set foot. The Wizard was a strange and mysterious figure. No one knew where he come from, how he ended up setting up shop in Kamiro, or why the entities that lived here tolerated his prescence.** All that was know was that he was a very powerful wizard, but also to be feared. Those who were truly desparate often sought his aid.

Before they entered the wagon, Fred asked a question of Astra using the Code of Kenad.*** "What was the reason that you kissed me?" asked Fred. "It seemed, er, rather an odd thing to do. Did the curse cause you to do it?"

*The magic beams that the heroes saw, of course, were a manifestation of this. They exist to keep the monsters of the Shreken from entering Adren— those with a pure heart may pass through, but those with evil in their mind will be instantly destroyed. No one knows whether they were set up by the Wizard of Kamiro, by the other inhabitants of Kamiro, or by the Forest of Adren itself.

**It doesn’t matter whether that is the correct spelling or not, because no one in Allaria knows which it is either. After a recent civil war between two mage colleges over the question, the King decreed that either "presence" or "prescence" is acceptable.****

*** The Code of Kenad was developed by Allarian and Aqualarian mages during the war with Tetrilonia, so that they could communicate through frogs rather than through the usual carrier pigeons, which were being killed by Tetrilonian bloodhawks. It is common knowledge to both Fred and Astra, because Astra is the heir to her nation's throne, while Fred's father was a major Allarian general.

****Mages can get angry over some very odd things.

Astra answered:

  1. "I suspect it was. No offense, but I can't think of any other reason I would kiss you."
  2. "It was simply an expression of gratitude."
  3. "I was not thinking straight, and I admit, odd as you may find it, that I love you. I've loved you from afar ever since I saw you as part of the infantry during the War. Of course, perhaps my curse is causing me to believe that."
  4. "I can't remember the question. Those footnotes were too long."
