Bethany's Misfortune

In the middle of the day, at precisely noon, not by the clock but by the sun, the building caught fire for no apparent reason whatsoever. It wasn't just a matter of luck, it was a matter of very bad luck. Worse, the building caught fire in the middle, on the thirtieth story of the building, forcing an evacuation. As the hoard of personnel became much more intimate in the stairwells, Fred's luck seemed to change for the better. A girl Fred had known in high school spotted him. Upon reaching the bottom of the stairs, Fred and she began to talk about what they had done since school and that they ought to go out sometime and catch up as friends. Fred thought that would be splendid and told her that Sunday was fine.

Meanwhile, back up in the building, Bethany tripped in her heels, and fell two full flights of stairs, leaving her bruised, battered and embarassed. It was fortunate that an EMT just happened to be there at the moment to rescue her and obtain medical help immediately. Upon arriving at the hospital it is discovered:

1. Bethany has broken several bones and will be in traction for months
2. Bethany has only a few bruises.
