Something Horrible

Fred pushed the cart back to the mailroom. He had a date with Bethany. Bethany, the beautiful. He pictured a small wedding--no! with friends like hers, it would be big and traditional. But who would he invite. He worried he needed more friends.

Just then, the door opened. It was Justin. Justin was two years older than Fred and a whole lot cooler. He was also Fred's boss. But he was cool. He let Fred work and didn't bug him.

"Hey Justin," said Fred, pretending to be cool, "so what's up?" He wanted to brag about the date with Bethany.

"What's up? I'll tell you what's up. Your attitude. Don't mess with me."

"Look, man, I'm not . . ."

"Not, nothing. Don't try it. Look, you're just annoying me, why don't you go do something someplace else?

Fred left. He had about fifteen minutes before taking another round with the mail cart. One of the secretaries saw him moping. "What's wrong," she asked.

"I don't know. Justin's mad at something and he's upset with me."

"I wouldn't worry about it. He's just probably having a bad day."

Fred continued walking until he got to Bethany's reception desk. "Hey long face!" she said with a smile. "What's wrong?"

"It's Justin. He's mad with me."

"Aww, don't worry about it sweetie."

She called him sweetie. He felt better, but thought he would milk this for as much as it was worth.

Just then, a voice came from over his shoulder. "Do you think we pay you to sit around and chit chat?! No! Listen young man, we don't do that around here." It was Stan McConnel, the boss.

"But . . ."

"Don't GIVE ME that attitude. Forget it. You're through. Pack your bags. You are fired, mister."

"I'll see you Saturday," said Beth, as Fred slowly walked away to Human Resources.
