The creature howled in pain, hastily withdrew the stump where its hand had
been and disappeared back under the pile of books, though not before Astra
and Ardua had noticed that its blood was almost black.
"There may be more of those things," Ardua said. "Time to go somewhere safer, I think." "But Fred was coming here. Suppose that creature captured him, and he's a prisoner somewhere nearby? We ought to make a search."
