Fred was amazed and confused, rather than having walked the width and
length of the eerie Southern Caves, he had only managed to walk himself
into tiredness and into a trap; for trap it surely was. The pit was full
of garbage, and it had various vents spliced throughout the ascending
length of the walls.
Fred looked at his comrades - Velus: the boy cursed into a dog's body, and Astra: Princess, warrior, and cursed into nakedness. They had all regained their feet. Fred spat out more dust and dirt from out of his mouth while Astra brushed grime from off her ahem and uh- uhs. "The DragonMage is a most foul beast," said Astra in disgust. "Yelp!" agreed Velus. "The upper ledge looks to be only some seven meters from us," said Fred. "Surely the length of only three men and then some." "But we are only two persons and then some," retorted Astra. "Bark!" added Velus. "What of those openings, those holes," said Astra. "Perhaps we can use them as footholds," answered Fred. And so the group began to rise from the pit, using the openings on the wall surface as footholds, but even before they could rise a third of the way a bright light filled the pit. Fred lost his balance and fell while Astra held firm, if a bit blinded. Astra could tell a dark shape shimmered within the light but could not see much else. The fact that the dark shape held a shining beam of light that resembled a shaft and blade led Astra to deduce that the form may not be friendly. "Fred," she yelled. "Strike at the shape!" But Fred, much closer to the light was immobilized by the pain searing through his iris' and into his brain. The shape moved swiftly, approaching the space below Astra, and it flung the shaft-form that shined - it was indeed a sword, its blade reflecting the light that filled the pit. The shaft found its mark in the midsection of Astra. Filled with pain and surprise she lost hold of her place on the pit wall and fell to the grungy floor. Naked, far from home, Astra died with the blade of a stranger perforating her lungs and heart. The stranger picked up the sword and in moments was gone, as was the light. "NO!!!!" cried out Fred, and in that second his resolve to kill the Dragon of the Southern Caves was strengthened a thousandfold.
