Fred looked down on the dead Dragon with mixed emotions. On the
one hand, he had carried out his quest. He had killed the Dragon
who had created so much evil in the Kingdom, and would now earn
the prize he had hoped for--the hand of the King's own daughter,
Exotica. On the other hand, it had been a quick fight, without honor. It
had fallen too quickly, in fact, for something that had caused as much
devastation as the Dragon was said to have done, even though Fred
was armed with the legendary Ymir, the Sword of Ice. Perhaps it had
all been an illusion? Warily, he gripped the Sword of Ice as he made
his way back to Nitch.
However, as he re-entered the caves, he found that the tunnel had changed. How could this be? He had heard rumors that the wyrm was a sorceror which honest steel could not destroy, but he had not believed them. Yet what else could the explanation be for this change, and for the scale that sang with strange power? There was not one tunnel back into the caves now, but a warren of them. Fred wondered whether he had entered the wrong cave. But it was very cold here, and Ymir made it colder, although the scale of the Dragon warmed him a bit. He needed to go back to a warmer place to rest before venturing back to Nitch. While searching through the twisty maze of tunnels, however, he found himself in a room with something rather surprising.
