The dragon was sitting on his haunches, blasting flame at a lavafall on the far side of the cave. He turned and looked at Astra.
"Hello." he said, in a smooth, deep voice. "See you escaped. Pity, really."
"How so?"
"That spot you were on was in my circle. I've spent a long time imbuing that circle with protective magic. The caverns, sure they have some, but I wanted you in those chains."
"And why would that be?"
"Ever hear of the San Andreas Fault, Princess?"
"No."
"Oh, that's right. That's what they're GOING to name it. You see, that's what were near and in a few days it's gonna rock and roll and everything for hundreds of miles will fall down. Quite a pity, really."
"No! Let me go, then, so I may lead others to safety!"
"In a few days? Really, Astra, Aqualaria and the Great Kingdom, their time is done. I only learned about this a week ago."
"You could have done something! Flown people out! Warned people!"
"I would have, if I didn't desire to see most of you wiped out. I'm going to enjoy the volcano."
"Volcano?"
"Sure. Lava's going to roast King Emery's castle to the ground. This lava, to be exact."
