At the bottom Andrea collided with something soft. It was too dark to see
what she had
rolled into, but then a familiar voice said: "Ouch!" It was
Tamery! "Tamery, it's me,
Andrea! Are you all right?" "Andrea! Thank goodness it's you. I twisted my
ankle
when I fell down the slope, and I couldn't go on." (Six months before,
Tamery would
have called her mistress "Lady Andrea", but travelling on their own
together for so long
had almost inevitably caused their relationship gradually to change into
one more of friendship
than of mistress and servant.)
"I thought you must be dead," said Andrea. For a moment, she was tempted to leave Tamery behind, for helping the girl was sure to slow her down. But though Andrea might be naïve and headstrong, and at the moment very frightened, underneath it all she had a good and resolute heart. So she said:
