Astra had only a limited interest in healing, education and history. But
finding out that Pash Bolger was also knowledgeable about self-defence had
intrigued her. If Pash - is that a title or a name? she wondered -
wanted to find out from her all about the lands of the south, perhaps she
in turn could learn something of value from him. She knew that she
was good at combat, whether with a sword or unarmed - no, let's not be
over-modest, very good, she thought. But there was always more
to learn. Since the monk carried no weapon that she could see, she guessed
that unarmed combat must be his specialty.
They had reached Astra's steed and Bolger's pony by now. As they mounted and set off on their journey, Astra reduced by twenty per cent the number of miles a day she had expected to cover, for a pony could not go as fast as a horse over a prolonged period. Still, it was not as though she was in any special hurry, for a messenger had been sent some days earlier to bring her mother the glad news that she was alive and well and would be home ere long. Her thoughts were interrupted by Bolger asking: "M'Lady, I am curious. Why did you opt to leave at such a strange hour?" (He had not heard the earlier conversation that Astra had had with Fred.) "Your lands are peaceful and well-ordered, I've been assured. Why should I not?" "That factor makes travelling at night possible, certainly, but I fail to see what advantage there could be from it. Sleeping during the day is always difficult to adjust to, and it is liable to confuse an inn if one turns up in the morning and attempts to book a room till dusk."
