Saving the Dragon

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 25244

A sense of compassion and empathy for all living things that suffer is a quality bestowed upon every human, and Fred tended siding with the underdog in a violent conflict - which this young dragon seemed to be. If he was going to take any action to save it's life, he would have to act swiftly.

Even as he struggled to plot his next move, the fight continued to rage on. The now-seething dragon had made it to some slightly higher ground above the snarling wolves, but they once again leaping up after it an another overwhleming onslaught. Two great spouts of smoke bellowed from the cornered dragon's nostrils, followed by a collum of flame. Two of the advancing wolves burst into fire, yelping wildly and running in circles. Yet this did little to stymie the new wave of attack.

How ironic this all was! After his cowardly retreat from the Dragon of the Southern Caves, miserably failing in his duties to his King and Country, he would once again be put in a position to spare yet another foul drake. He was a Dragonslayer, that is what he had trained for his entire life! To slay dragons, not flea from them or give them outright aid. Yet the training of his Instructors had failed him, the Dragon's magicks had overwhelmed the feeble spell defences he had been taught.

The dramatic sounds of the fight continued to echo through the moonlit night. The dragon was continuing to weaken, looking as if it could hardly manage to stay standing upright as the wolves lunged at it's vulnerable leathery wings and underside. It went up on it's haunches in a vain attempt throw it's assailents off, but suceeded only in loosing it's balance and falling onto it's backside. The creature was certainly doomed.

"HEY!" blurted out Fred, still indecisive on how best to go about all of this. "Hey wolves! Over here! HEY!"

Several of the creatures turned to face him, their yellow eyes gleaming and mouths foaming.

"Yeah, that's right, I'm talking to you!" Fred began waving his arms and jumping about. "What are you going to do about it!?"

This had been the distraction the young drake had needed. Taking what would likely be it's only window of opportunity for escape, it began to beat it's variegated wings with an effort. Then, with remarkable speed, the careworn lingwyrm deftly carried itself into the night sky on a current of air. One unlucky wolf had refused to loosen it's jaws from around the beast's tail until it was too late. It fell to it's death.

The dragon glided directly over Fred and landed in the top of a giant cedar, it's weight bending the tree as if it was caught in a gust of heavy wind. It struggled to stay perched at the dizzying height, as loosened twigs and branches came crashing down from above. It gazed down at it's enemies with an uneasy fear reflected in it's eyes, and licked at it's wounds when it could manage. Fred, meanwhile, now had the full attention of the pack.

Now I will receive the fate I so justly deservehe mused. A most fitting end for a failed Quest!

The wolves began to advance....

  1. Fred would die fighting, it seemed. At least he would have that honor...
