Fred wondered how the witch Leonora had become the dragoness's servant. To
tell the dragoness that he/she was not in fact Leonora would not be a good
idea, she felt. Instead she would try to bluff her way out of it. As the
dragoness's supposed servant, her life expectancy should be a lot greater.
"I encountered the egg-thief by chance," she said. "She boasted to me of how she had killed the male dragon and had subsequently stolen your egg. She was too formidable a foe for me to deal with her myself, so instead I made sure to lead her towards you." "Where did you come by that ill-fitting armour? It is far too large and heavy for you. Why should you even want to wear armour anyway?" That reminded Fred that she also had some of the dead male dragon's treasure in her pack. If the dragoness should discover it, that might lead to further awkward questions. "I, er, came upon the corpse of a man - presumably a hopeful dragon slayer," she said. "I decided to take his armour and pack. There was some treasure in the pack, which he must have stolen."
