The Destroyer of Worlds

"Then that's the last thing we should do," Astra said. "That much is plain. Whoever's behind all this, and who seemingly intends to use us as some sort of weapons of mass destruction, perhaps thinks to control us through those collars somehow. Well, we shan't play his game." They were brave words, but in her heart she wondered whether they would really be able to defy someone or something that possessed such extraordinary power.

"Oh, I think that you will," a voice said, seemingly heard in their minds directly rather than via their ears. It was a quiet voice, but it seemed both authoritative and menacing. It was also a female voice. Perhaps Astra's assumption as to their captor's gender had been wrong. Fred and Astra looked around the chamber, trying to locate the source.

"There," Fred said, pointing. From the glowing globe on the altar, a black cloud was issuing. It seemed to be throbbing and writhing, and was steadily growing in size.

"That's awfully reminiscent of the cloud in the pictures," Astra said.

"Indeed. Meet your mistress," the voice said. It was stronger than before. "I am Shiva, Destroyer of Worlds. Now, put on your collars."

1. Fred and Astra found themselves complying.
2. Fred and Astra managed to resist the command.
