Further Tragedy

Duke, the Commander and Blue 5 kept the rebels pinned down as the other three charged into the hole made by the Commander's missiles. Blue 5 went next, pausing only to hack an enemy suit in half with his vibroblades. Then Duke, and the Commander last, moving slowly, letting each of his opponents have a burst of f-cannonfire.

"Hurry up, Commander!" Thelonius yelled.

"I'll be right there..." the Commander began to say. But then a rebel Fightech that had run out of bullets suddenly swooped in next to him. "Look out, Commander!" Slash yelled. The rebel smashed into the Commander with a body-slam, and then detonated his suit's pseudopowerplant. A massive explosion engulfed them both, and then there was nothing left but flying parts.

"Commander!!!" Thelonius cried. "No!!"

Screaming in rage, he flew to the breach and opened fire, letting loose with cannon and missile at the same time. In the next second he was hit by two Tsaryna missiles, one after the other. Miraculously, he backpedaled from the explosion with most of his armor intact.

"Fall back!" Blue 5 ordered. "Their numbers won't help them in these hallways!"

"Oh, man!" Slash groaned. "Commander!"

"This isn't happening... this isn't happening!" Thelonius was saying.

The three Humans and one Elenian hurried after Blue 5 as he led the way through the massive, circular hallways of the rebel base. The 'bot was right - here in the hallways the mercenary Fightechs' superior weapons and armor had the edge. Leaving a trail of dead rebels and burning Fightechs in their wake, they finally arrived at a giant reinforced steel door.

"This is it." Blue 5 said. "The key rebel command network for one fourth of the entire eastern hemisphere."

"Something's not right." Davis said. "I've got the worst feeling about this I've ever had. Be careful, Blue 5!"

1. Without saying a word, the 'bot slashed the door to pieces with his vibroblades and stepped inside.
